Maternity Shopping: Before the Bump is Big

Dressing for pregnancy has proven to be a challenge for me. I ordered a maternity dress when I was about three months along, and it looked like a giant, black circus tent. I decided to keep it since I'm certain it will look less tent-like in a couple of months, but it made me wonder what women wear during the early to mid-pregnancy phase. My normal clothes are getting tighter and tighter, but it still seems a little too soon for full-on maternity wear.

Since we're in Texas and the weather is heating up, I decided to just stock up on a few loose-fitting, non-maternity dresses (like the ones above) to get me through the awkwardly-shaped phase. I ordered dresses a size or two larger than my usual, which ended up being a great and comfortable solution. It's nice to have some wardrobe flexibility, and I'm sure I'll put them to use post-pregnancy too.

  1. I had the same difficulty. Half of the maternity stuff I found (thrifted, mind you) was too big at first so there was a lot of tights and big shirts/dresses action going on for a while for me, since it was winter. Praying the heat doesn't mess with you too bad!

  3. Loose fitting sundresses worked for me almost all the way through. As long as the have no waist or a high waist, I just stretched them out like crazy and felt comfy doing it. I was an especially big fan of cheap maxis with really simple lines. They made me feel significantly less tent like and looked quite chic with a cute cardigan. I say invest in a couple maternity/ nursing camis and a pair of maternity jeans, those worked well for me for before and after. And look for sun dresses with wraps, cross overs, and v necks. Then you really can wear them all the time after the baby comes and you're nursing!

    1. Thanks, Amy! I have yet to try maternity jeans, but I better go for it since my usual ones can't stretch any further.

  4. Oh, I had to chuckle when I read the title of your post. I had just read a post by Erin of Life in a Tiny Apartment, who is also expecting, and all the comments that follow. One of her peeves is the use of the word "bump" to describe her belly. Then I see your post that uses "bump" to describe your pregnant belly. Funny how everyone has a different opinion on what's acceptable and what's not during pregnancy.

Now, about those cute dresses! Stay cool and comfortable this summer. You'll look great.

    1. I read Erin's post too! It definitely made me think about my use of the word bump. I did agree with a lot of Erin's points about strangers commenting on pregnancy weight gain, guessing the baby's gender, etc. Bump just happens to be one of the things that doesn't bother me. :)

  5. I had a tough time dressing my belly earlier on, especially feeling like I had a beer-gut as opposed to feeling pregnant. A lot of the maternity clothes I bought didn't really work at first, but now that I am 7 months in, things are working out nicely--even getting a bit snug...yikes! I really started to really pop these last few weeks, and with the larger bump have come actual bumps and waves from the babe that I can see from the outside...it's wild and so fun! Loose dresses are great, though! I tried several different pairs of maternity jeans and my favorite are the jeggings from Target. The GAP skinny jeans aren't all that skinny in the ankle, I found...but, I love their maternity pocket tees.
